Biodegradable Golf Balls: Are They Worth It?

August 12, 2021 By Tom pieter

Why Use Biodegradable Golf Balls?

With the effects of climate change becoming more apparent all over the world. More people are taking action to ensure that manufacturing materials are sustainable. The Golf industry is also taking a big step to go green by producing biodegradable Golf balls. This means that the earth will absorb the balls naturally in a short time.

As individuals, we all have equal responsibility to protect the environment. Instead of buying the traditional plastic Golf balls. Get the biodegradable ones. Plastic pollution is one of the most dangerous environmental crises. That the world is faces.

Most of our plastic waste end up in the oceans. They then take hundreds of years to break down into smaller bits. Some aquatic animals may feed on micro plastic bits and endanger their lives in the process.

Biodegradable Golf balls is actually the name of an eco-friendly company based in Canada. As the name implies this company has dedicated their resources to ensuring that we can all play Golf without harming our beautiful planet. In this article, I will be telling you why this is my absolute favorite company to buy water soluble Golf balls. Also why you should all switch to biodegradable Golf balls.

Why You Should Try the Biodegradable Golf Balls

  • You are basically saving the planet

You are probably wondering why you should worry about Golf balls right? I mean, Golf is a land sport. Approximately 100,000 Golf balls are missing in Californian resorts close to sea, lakes or the ocean every year. There are a lot of Golf balls that make their way to water bodies every year. When you play your part by making the switch to dissolvable Golf balls, you will become a hero for the environment.

  • Don’t you just love the name of the company?

I mean, there are other manufacturers producing similar green Golf balls but this company shows that it has a single focus by using the name “biodegradable Golf balls”, it is unique and self-explanatory.

  • The Golf balls dissolve in water

Apart from consisting of plastic, traditional Golf balls also consist of harmful chemicals like Zinc oxide and Zinc acrylate. Along with not degrading for a long time, these chemical coatings are toxic. When they wear off, damage sea life. Biodegradable Golf balls are made with corn starch and polyvinyl alcohol. They dissolve in water quickly leaving nothing behind.

  • It looks the same

Some Golfers can be picky with their Golf balls. Some even have special companies that they buy from. Most biodegradable Golf balls look exactly like the traditional Golf balls. They also sound like real Golf balls with similar weights. So it is easy to switch.

The biodegradable balls cost 360 Canadian dollars for a carton of 144 balls and 15 Canadian dollars

for 100 Golf tees.

Other Companies Making Biodegradable Golf Balls

Although biodegradable Golf balls are my favorite. There are several companies that use innovative methods to create environmentally friendly Golf balls. Check out the Golf balls companies that have made it to the top of my list!

U-MAINE LOBSTER SHELL GOLF BALL

Most lobster canning companies in Maine usually dump the lobster shells. Instead of letting it become waste, researchers from the university of Maine and the Lobster institute developed a Golf ball made from lobster shells. This zero-waste balls dissolve in a week inside water and can also act as a fertilizer for the soil.

The state-of-the-art lobster balls only costs less than 19 cents per ball. They can be continuously shot on cruise ships without guilt.

ALBUS GOLF ECOBIOBALL

This company is actually solving two problems at once. Imagine not only making eco-friendly Golf balls. But providing fish food as well. AlbusGolf balls have fish food as the core with a swift dissolving external material. Fishes can either sense the food inside and chew on the ball when it hits the water, or the exterior will dissolve in 48 hours leaving behind food for sea animals.

Although this Golf ball is a single use type, doesn’t it just feel good that you are not only playing Golf but feeding fishes as well?

Golf balls pollution is an environmental problem. That was only recently brought to light. What’s impressive is the quick response of the industry by creating green Golf balls. This shows that a lot of people care about the planet. Personally, I love using the biodegradable Golf balls because it feels good to use. You just have to be careful while storing them, you wouldn’t want to let water anywhere near them.

Bottom Line

Biodegradable golf balls are an excellent way to stop polluting our oceans and environment. Influencer Golfers on social media think its really cool to hit golf balls from yachts or rooftops, the truth is that you also need to care about where your golf ball lands and how it will decompose. Biodegrable balls are a great way to keep your conscience clear after hitting a few golf balls into the ocean.

Volvik Golf Balls

August 9, 2021 By Tom pieter

Volvik golf balls are notable for one thing; vibrant colors. If you really want to take a swing at pink, orange or yellow balls, Volvik is your best bet. While they have only been around since 2010, even Bubba Wilson used Volvik golf balls in 2017.

Even though the colors make them stand out, is Volvik really just about color? Or is there some other reason it has been growing in popularity recently? I tested out some Volvik golf balls to help you answer these questions.

Best Volvik Golf Balls

Volvik Vivid

Check Price

Volvik’s vivid is one of the coolest balls to use. This ball started the trend for matte finish balls and it is available in white, yellow, pink, purple, red, orange, green and blue for high visibility. People with poor eyesight can have their pick of various colors. It is perfect for mid handicap players, you can get the most of these balls with a slow swing of 70mph.

Slices and hooks do not work very well but the balls will go straight when you want them to. Another noticeable thing is the super soft texture so the performance on the green is superb. It rolls nicely. I would conclude that the distance is not all that impressive even with the 3-piece construction but it is pretty fun to play.

Volvik S3 Tour & Volvik S4 Tour

Check Price

The S4 tour golf ball takes it up a notch with a 4-piece construction, urethane cover and 90-compression. It is really special because it can go toe to toe with Titleist Pro V1 which is a regular for golf tournaments. Unlike Volvik’s usual, this S4  model is a little bit more professional with just green and white balls. It gives great distance off the tee but you will need a fast swing to get extra yards.

It is pretty obvious that the S4 is an improvement of the S3, I would say the S3 feels softer but the S4 performs better off drivers and wedges. For one, you get higher launch angle and spin, although the difference is not much, that extra yards it gives is quite important. The covers for both the S3 and S4 may scuff easily but this does not affect its performance at all. Overall, these two balls are for advanced players, slow swings just won’t cut it, you need a super-fast swing speed.

S3 Tour is a little more versatile than the S4 with 3 colors; orange, white and pink. It is a 3-piece urethane cover ball that is appropriate for an intermediate golfer. I’m going to be honest with you, the S4 performs better in my opinion but S3 is still pretty cool.

Volvik Marvel pack

Volvik is just the embodiment of fun, the Volvik marvel pack will save you from other golfers claiming your balls because of its uniqueness. This is similar to the vivid balls but with ionomer cover instead. With a compression of 75, it is quite soft. You can get a good distance even with slow wedge swings. If you are the patriotic type, there is also the USA pack with flag colored golf balls.

Because of all their playful looks, Volvik balls feel like it will fall short in performance but that did not happen at all. They are not cheap balls so a lot of work was put into the design of each ball. The marketing strategy of getting customers with colors was genius but what really keeps people going back to Volvik golf balls is the high quality, awesomeness and durability.

This list is compiled after proper research on each of the golf balls that are considered to be the best golf ball for beginners.

Certain questions must be answered to make your decision even easier. Without wasting any time, let’s jump into these questions.

Frequently Asked Questions – FAQs

Q. Why are dimples on the ball important?
A. A lot of research has gone into the design of golf balls and the dimples are an important aerodynamic consideration. A completely smooth ball will fly through the sky without ever getting much lift. It will only ever go as high as you hit it along the balls given trajectory which will also be affected by drag. The ball will have to fight the force of the air and wind it is passing through.

Q. Which ball is the best golf ball for beginners?
A. It is an important question, answer to this question is, look for a ball which has the following characteristics will be the best ball for you as a beginner

  • 320+ dimples
  • At least dual soft-core
  • Aerodynamically sound
  • Great spin control
  • Good projectile motion.

Q. Which color ball shall I use as a beginner?
A. Use a bright color in the beginning so that you can track your shots in mid-air and can also judge spin on the ball easily. I would prefer green, yellow and orange to start with.

Q. What iron I should use?
A. As a beginner, I would suggest not investing a lot at irons. Get a good one just to start your game with, gradually make higher steps as soon your game begins to get better and better.

Q. Which short should I start my practice?
A. If it was me, I would start with long-distance shots to get my control on the iron and get used to it.

If you are just starting in golf, you may find that you need a lot of questions answered before your final shopping list is complete. This is the same with any sport really and although you are always going to need the right equipment such as irons and golf balls, some are more important than others.

Here is a list of things to consider picking up;

Some good golf irons

Much of this will be down to preference and if you are just starting, then it is far more important to learn the basics than it is to get the right irons. With that said, they can greatly improve your game. Taylor made are for those that are serious about golf, though be warned that they are harder to master than other irons.

A good pair of golf shoes

You can get away with a decent pair of sports shoes but if you are serious about golf then you should look at getting some proper footwear. Not only will your feet be more comfortable but they will also help to keep them dry and if you opt for spikes, you won’t be slipping around.

The right type of golf ball

Much like the irons, above, there are many different types of golfballs and beginners will want to look for ones that are somewhat forgiving as it will help to keep your score down. A distance golf ball will go further than most others so are a good choice, plus they also limit the amount of swerving too. These would be best for anyone that is looking for straighter shots, with more distance but have yet to master the slice.

Some suitable headgear

Playing a full round of golf might mean you are on the course for most of the day. Not only will this help to shield your eyes from sun glare when you are taking shots, but it will also help to prevent sunstroke. This is more common sense than anything else and as they aren’t expensive there is no reason to not have one handy.

To sum it up:

Beginner’s golf balls have several features and characteristics to look for as discussed above, but If you are a keen learner and totally novice to learn the game, I would suggest starting Titleist NXT Golf extreme balls. For me, they are the best golf balls for beginners.

1. Titleist Pro V1 & Pro V1x (2019)

One of the top-ranked golf ball producers presents a new release, the Pro V1 and V1x. Well, this time around, they’ve focussed more on ball speed and distance-related improvements.

By making the casing layer under the shell thicker, which is 14 percent on Pro V1 and 11 on Pro V1x which increases the distance traveled by the ball. Other than that, the outermost cover is made 17 percent thinner.

best golf balls for high handicappers

All adding to the performance of the ball. The core of the ball is also reformulated to deliver more speed and less spin while maintaining their feel characteristics and compression, especially with the iron core.

The control, however, is not affected by these modifications making it a “Drop-and-Stop™ Short Game Control”.

The V1x packs in low long game spin and high trajectory. V1 is 3 layered and V2 is 4, both having a very soft feel and control around the field. In addition to that, a new catchy yellow version of both of them is now available.

Overall resulting in faster travel and long-range providing the best short game control. That’s the main reason we have placed it in our list of top golf balls for high handicappers.

Pros

  • Extraordinary Distance
  • High Trajectory on full shots
  • Durability from Thermoset Urethane Elastomer Cover System
  • Brand’s signature “Drop-and-Stop™ Short Game Control”
  • Allows maximum spin control
  • Very Sticky on the ground

Cons

  • Above-average price point
  • Designed specifically for faster swinging players

Conclusion:

Designed for Short game control, plus long-range, plus speed, altogether, makes this particular thing best in all sense. No doubt why are they renounced worldwide as #1.

2. Callaway Chrome Soft & Soft X (2020)

With its new 34 percent larger core, it generates higher launch and lower spins. Its outer core is made thinner and stiffer, plus it is reinforced with Graphene which means it’ll provide more wedge spin.

All this comes with a new High-speed mantle system consisting of a proprietary ionomer blend for efficiency and faster ball speeds. These balls feature on-point accuracy from the ultra-low compression core.

best golf balls for high handicappers

Chrome Soft X is the same but with a firmer feel and shorter driver spin. It is said to be up to seven yards longer in range.

Both of these are available with or without the Triple Track alignment system and four distinct colors including lime, tortoise, orange, and the traditional white. That ll obviously increase the visibility.

I personally think that this is one of the best high handicapper/s golf balls in the market.

Pros

  • Gives easy distance
  • Great for beginners
  • Pretty much straight flight
  • Available in distinctive colors

Cons

  • Not a great touch on the green
  • Not much durable (thin cover scuffs easily)

Conclusion:

With given the improvements, this Chrome Soft and Soft X check out all you need to start with improving the performance on the course in a relatively short time.

3. TaylorMade TP5 & TP5x (2019)

This 5 layered construction has a new “High-Flex Material” which helps to achieve higher ball speed through a greater rebound effect. This material acts like a tightly wound spring that builds energy and rebounds quickly, generating more ball speed.

Also, with a 30% stiffer, more durable cover around the core of the ball. Although the outer two layers are not as durable as their previous models, This one really takes up the advantage of the new build which has 332 dimple cover and provides extra control.

With this, you get a compression grading of 87 thanks to its 3-layer core. The control you get from these best golf balls for high handicappers is very impressive and we suspect it has something to do with the gradient layering that helps the ball distribute striking energy more evenly and reduces spin.

They call it the “Tri-Fast Core” that delivers a maximum carry distance and less drag force.

Personally, I love this TaylorMade ball.

Pros

  • Optimized Spin rates due to improved design
  • Great launch angle
  • Stuffed layers add more speed
  • The HFM (High Flex Material) material increases the distance
  • Straight flight

Cons

  • Premium Price Tag

Conclusion:

Frequently Asked Questions – FAQs

Q. What to look for in a golf ball if you are a High Handicapper?
A.
Golf Sporting is expanding and competition is at a peak, thus the top golf balls manufacturing brands are starting to make balls just right for different players in the sport. Few points to keep in mind while selecting the best one for you are:

>Budget

Of course, the amount of money you are willing to spend is going to affect your decision. Before strolling through the seemingly endless market for golf balls, we would highly recommend that you finalize your spending budget.

Doing so will make it easy for you to shortlist expensive products, so you don’t waste time ogling at their premium features. While we’re asking you to stay away from expensive products, there is no doubt about the fact that the more you are willing to pay, the better your golf balls will be.

Expensive doesn’t always mean better, though. This is why you will have to keep all the other factors in mind too.

>Golf Ball’s Cover

The cover of a golf ball plays an integral role in determining the nature of the ball’s flight and spin. For straighter and consistent long distances, there is no better way to go than Suryl-covered balls. If you wish for a spin, then a urethane cover will do wonders for you. As a high handicapper, it is better to play with golf balls of all different covers. This way, you will be able to adapt your swing and strokes to all different playing conditions.

>Construction

The construction of your choice of the golf ball is another important consideration to find the best golf ball for high handicap golfers. The construction of golf balls actually depends on the number of “pieces” it contains. You will find 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and even 6-piece golf balls in the market. So, what this numbering is all about, let’s find out.

1-Piece Golf Ball

As the name suggests, this golf ball is made of one piece of solid material with no mantles and covers. It is not expensive and not used for professional golfing either. You will mostly find them on driving ranges and mini-courses. As a high handicapper, we would advise you to refrain from using 1-piece golf balls just because of their lower price points.

Their low compression rating and bland construction make them bad for both spin and distance. You can use them on the course and may as well score the required par. But they are not going to improve your game by any means.

2-Piece Golf Ball

Two-piece golf balls are generally constructed with a core and a cover around them. These golf balls are typically aimed at beginners, so higher handicappers can choose to strike them around too. Their prices are generally affordable, but we wouldn’t go so far as to say that the materials used in their construction qualify for a Tour-level performance.

The characteristics of these types of balls usually offer a lot more roll in the greens or the fairways alongside feeling harder off the clubface. Now, this can be good news because Tour-level balls just accentuate all the flaws in your drive. A fade will turn into a slice, and a draw may come off as hook – simply because Tour-balls are known to create more spin.

3-Piece Golf Ball

This category of golf ball features a layer (mantle) around the core alongside a cover that is, more often than not, made of urethane. Urethane, if you didn’t already know, is a very soft material and is often the choice of material for most premium golf balls.

Urethane produces an increased rate of spin when faced with faster swinging or the shots of very skilled players. If you want to improve your spin and also control it, then it is better to practice with 3-piece golf balls.

4-Piece Golf Balls

4-piece golf balls feature a dual-core covered with a mantle and a cover. These are the most expensive golf balls based on their construction. Many Tour players use them for their initial low speed and impeccable precision. For high handicappers, this ball doesn’t serve any purpose. In fact, the use of 4-piece golf balls can take a toll on your confidence because these balls are tricky to play from both the fairway and on the green.

>Spin

As you may have determined for yourself, golf balls offer a huge tradeoff between spin and distance. Hence if you’re looking for more spin, you will have to sacrifice on distance and vice versa. Golf ball with deeper dimples and more layers tend to provide the most spin. For high handicappers, however, we will highly recommend those products that have low spin ratings – if you wish to improve your overall performance.

>Dimples

The dimples on the surface of your golf ball work in a manner that they impact the air pressure while reducing its overall coverage area. This, if you think about it, directly impacts the distance your golf ball is meant to reach. That being said, if you choose shallow and wide dimpled golf balls, you will experience lesser backspin and longer distance shots.
